“If I wear chunky heels, I will embody grace and high fashion,” mused my 13-year-old self.
A poor attempt at a concealed grin revealed not only my trendy mouth full of braces, but also my ingenious plot to be cool.
But, as anyone who has endured the tumultuous middle school years knows, life can be cruel.
The story goes something like this:
There I sat, cross-legged on the gym floor for a solid 20 minutes or so, no doubt captivated by a chat session with friends about N’Sync (or a similar important world issue). Ignoring the fact that my right leg had fallen asleep, I rose to get up, but knew I’d be greeting the floor shortly.
I wobbled violently back and forth on the very chunky heel that I’d relied on for its promise of a rising social status and support. Inevitably, I crashed hard on the concrete floor.
I bruised my tailbone and my ego that fateful day, vowing to never again wear shoes that would just as quickly build me up as they would take me down.
It wasn’t a very serious vow though. I think I went back to wearing heeled shoes about 3 weeks later. Then I also thought that chunky sneakers (two words that should never go together) would be a grand idea. I cringe now remembering how stylish I believed I was.
I’ve moved on from the chunky trend, but even recently, I purchased a pair of heels that the reviews promised were comfortable and cute.
Cute, yes. Comfortable? Um, no.
Made with dexflex by Dexter, these flats are probably about as close to walking on clouds as you can get:
“The soft footbed boasts a two layer insole. Memory foam, like pillows provided in five-star hotels, absorbs shock, shapes and holds perfectly to cradle the foot for lasting comfort.”
If that’s not enough of a reason to purchase these, here are more reasons why I love these flats:
- Available in 4 colors/prints (Black, Nude, Silver and Leopard) (I own Nude, Leopard and Black. And let’s face it…it’s inevitable that I’ll purchase the silver)
- Available in Wide Width (in Black and Nude)
- Extremely affordable (Regular price=$29.99, but Payless literally always has a some type of sale happening, so you’ll probably never have to pay the $29.99)
- Comfortable straight out of the box! (That’s my usual gripe with shoes…blisters on my heels and general discomfort. Not so with these flats.)
- Perhaps the best aspect: Versatile
I’ve worn the Nude Claire Scrunch Flats to two weddings:
I also frequently wear these to work with dresses, pants or skirts:
They are also perfect for casual wear. I’ve worn the leopard flats for a night out, and out to dinner with friends:
So whether you’re making up for your fashion transgressions in middle school or you’re looking for a cheap and comfortable flat, you’ve got to try the Claire Scrunch Flats from Payless.
Note: I am not being compensated by Payless for this post. I just really, really enjoy these flats.
